  • Do you need to buy a new deer tag in oklahoma after the first of year?

deer hunting runs from nov 1 to jan 15 do i need a new deer tag for 15 daysDo you need to buy a new deer tag in oklahoma after the first of year?
Look on your deer tag, it usually tells you the date it expires. I know in my state MN one tag is good through out the season.Do you need to buy a new deer tag in oklahoma after the first of year?
According to the Oklahoma Dept. of Wildlife Conservation Hunting Regulations page 19,

    ';Jan. 1 - 15: All hunters must possess a hunting license and a deer archery license for the current calendar year, unless otherwise exempt. Most annual licenses are valid from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Deer taken during this time count toward the hunter's 2009 bag limit.';
Jan 1-15, 2010 All hunters must possess a hunting license and a deer archery license for the current calendar year, unless otherwise exempt.

Ok 2009-2010 hunting guide, Page 19.

Deer tags are not dated. Deer taken in this period count on your 2009 limit.
Typically tags run through out the season. You may need a new hunting license if one is required and they are based on a calendar year.
Nope. The deer tag will last the season.

Spiritually speaking, how do they get the deer to cross at that yellow road sign?

    Salt licks.

Edit: Basically, they post the crossing signs not only at places where deer are most often hit (meaning that it is a common trail), but also simply as a reminder to drive cautiously as there may generically be deer in the region.Spiritually speaking, how do they get the deer to cross at that yellow road sign?

well, I will let you in on a little secret... when I say I am hunting, I am really teaching them how to read...... sssshhhh. dont tell ok ??? go in peace..... God bless
    historical data.

Go into the woods and nail maps on the trees....so he will know where to go. Have a great night. I'm going to bed.
he wont care. You dont run him.

What load should i use for deer?

I have a Mosin and was wondering if i could use Silver Bear 203 gr. on deer at one hundred yards? If not tell me some other good loads and companies. What load should i use for deer?
    No.....

I am assuming you are referring to this stuff......

    http://www.jgsales.com/popup_image.php/p鈥?/a>

    http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/鈥?/a>

If this is what you want to use then refrain from using it... This stuff is FMJ ( Full Metal jacket).... You must use soft point ammunition... This FMJ will quite possibly make a hole thru the animal and exit out the other side, not doing enough damage to drop the animal immediately... The deer may run off far enough away where you will never find it... Then it may die a slower painfull death. This is not humane... Use SP (Soft Point).... It will expand, do much more tissue damage and drop the deer much faster....

    Use this stuff......

http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/鈥?/a>What load should i use for deer?
That rifle will work fine for taking deer or any other game that you hunt with a large caliber rifle. The problem you have here is that you will probably have a hard time finding the right ammo for the job. You may have to have ammo made for you by someone who reloads bullets.

As mentioned you do not want to use FMJ or bal ammo. You want a pointed soft point (lead tip bullet) or a round nose (lead tip bullet). Any grain of bullet from 150 on up to a 200 grain will be fine. To me 200 grain is over kill for deer.

I use to use 180 grain to take deer, but have recently switched to 150 grain. I reload my own ammo and like the idea of being able to cater my ammo to my liking instead of buying factory ammo that I know nothing about.

The Mosin Nagant's I see are chambered in 7.62x54R and again you will not find hunting ammo in that caliber at your local Wal-Mart or your local sporting goods store. You will find possibly at your local sporting goods store and online all sorts of ammo, but it will most likely be in FMJ's.

If Silver Bear makes a pointed soft point in the 203 grain then that will work, but I don't know and haven't seen any ammo in that caliber for hunting.
I have to confess on the front end that I don't know that particular bullet, but in general, anything with that much sectional density tends on occasion to punch through both lungs without setting up, leaving you with a tedious job of blood-trailing. It's certainly better to have too much penetration than too little, but if I were doing it, I'd handload with something along the lines of the Hornady 174 grain roundnose. With its SD of .255, it fits right into that .24-.28 range that seems the best compromise for deer.
just about any soft pointed bullet from about 165 grains or heavier will humanly kill deer with the velocity produced by the MN cartridges,

The MN (and most other battle rifles from that era) are all near or equal to .30-06 for performance... it's a matter of bullet construction-stay away from metal clad, ball or FMJ bullets and your good to go.
In that caliber, be sure to use a soft-point bullet for the best results. The FMJ military-surplus stuff will more likely just go through a deer and not make a clean kill.
If it is a soft point bullet it will work.
as long as it is a soft point bullet you will be fine
It depends on what kind of deer, and how far. Any 30-06 gun works at about 100 yards, but the farther the target the more it drops. A 243 is a good light gun that works at long ranges because it doesnt drop.

Can anyone tell me where I can find some land to hunt deer on in far west Texas?

I hunt in and around Fort David National Park.

    It's pretty good most weekends.

Not as easy as the zoo as it's pretty damn big.

But I get a real buzz when all the staff are dresed up in civil war uniforms.

Just keep low during the kids holidays or you might get caughtCan anyone tell me where I can find some land to hunt deer on in far west Texas?
That depends entirely on whether or not you plan on transporting the deer onsite and hunting them after releasing them in the 'wild' or if you plan on finding a plot of lang with deer already onsite in order to facilitate the task. If you don't already have the stock of deer you plan on hunting or don't have the means to transport your prey to the land upon which you intend to hunt then I'd go for the latter option.

The easiest way to hunt deer in Texas would be to go to the zoo in Dallas. The deer there are already in a cage so there's virtually no chance you'll miss and you'll have the added adrenaline rush of fleeing the law once you've taken out your targets. Be very careful of children and bears in the vicinity. Can anyone tell me where I can find some land to hunt deer on in far west Texas?
I don't think the far West corner of Texas Homecare is an appropriate place to hunt deer or anything for that matter. If you wish to maybe collect some insects without disturbing people that are happily going about their Saturday home improvements shopping then fine. But taking weapons and live ammunition in there is wholly unacceptable. Grow up. You don't have to play with guns near young children to be a man.

Who will look like a bigger deer in headlights Sunday.....Rex Grossman or Peyton Manning?

Manning will be playing catch will Ellis Hobbs and Asante Samuel. The Patriots own Manning in the playoffs. He would rather be flying out to play the Chargers than deal with the Patriots at home. Grossman won't have to play well for the Bears because the Bears will be running all over the Saints defense. So the answer to your question is Manning.

For more on the Saints, Bears, Colts, Patriots and the NFL, check this site out. http://factipedia.com/sportsblogs/Who will look like a bigger deer in headlights Sunday.....Rex Grossman or Peyton Manning?

    Super bowl champions: Bears!
Manning will. and he will choke under pressure
peyton , as he is used to getting beat by the patriots , Sexy Rexy on the other hand will look like a vet , having one ofthe best games of his pro career , GO BEARS !!!
Rex without a doubt! N.O. Saints are playing better team football than any other team right now. I see this to continue in Chicago. The N.O. players have more motivation to finish this season a Cinderella story. Come on the city of N.O. will be rock-in again!
    Rex Grossman
Neither, the biggest deer in headlights will be Drew Brees. Grossman and Brady wil play good but not great and Manning will light it up. But the Bears will still win the Bowl.
GROSSMAN WILL LOSE. HE SUCKS SAINT NUTS.

THIS YEAR THE NFC WILL WIN. SAINTS OVER COLTS.

  • My car was hit by a deer with no insurance. I was told to get insurance. Can I still file a claim?

No, you cannot get insurance after the fact and then expect the insurance company to pay for something that happened before they insured your car!

    Stop driving without insurance.

*sigh*My car was hit by a deer with no insurance. I was told to get insurance. Can I still file a claim?
I didn't know a deer could even get insurance, but too bad for you he didn't have it before he hit you.

The answer to your question is no, you cannot - you need to be insured prior to your acquiring insurance (shame on your for driving uninsured to begin with). If you're thinking you could just lie about when the deer accident occurred - be very careful with that. Insurance fraud is a serious offense, if you get caught you'll likely go to jail, so just take your lumps (pay for the damage out of pocket) and be smarter in the future. Isn't insurance required by law where you live? It is in most places. My car was hit by a deer with no insurance. I was told to get insurance. Can I still file a claim?
Ideally, no. However, In some cases when you get full coverage insurance they will ask you if there is any damage on the car. If you say no and they dont look at the car to confirm then you can get the insurance and then wait about a week and then file a claim. It's a felony if you get caught but i'm sure we've all done worse
nope sorry charlie.. the insurance will cover the car only if its state changes after the time you get the insurance. Bet thing to do is start looking around your local shops and price who will fix it the cheapest sorry.
Can't believe that deer are running around with no insurance - there should be a law.

You cannot (it would be a crime) file an insurance claim on something that happened before you had paid for that insurance.

You should have been saving the money you should have been spending on insurance in order to be able to pay for your own troubles.
Wow, it sucks that the deer had no insurance.

You cannot make a claim on something that happened before you got insurance. Some people might tell you to get the insurance, wait a couple of weeks and then claim you hit the deer. This is illegal, though.
I've never heard of a deer having insurance.

If you obtain insurance now, after the fact - you would be committing insurance fraud if you tried to make a claim for something that happened in the past.
I wouldn't expect a deer to have any insurance ;D

I doubt it. Unless it happened while you were covered, the insurance company probably won't do anything
did the deer get a ticket for no ins/go to court and make sure the deer gets fined for traveling without insurance/you will have to sue the deer direct
No you can't make a claim for an accident that occurred before you had insurance.
Lol when i first looked at this question i thought you were saying the deer didn't have insurance haha :)
    No.

That is why people buy insurance. In case something like that happens.

    Live and learn.
sue the deer. (read your question again)

no you can't still file a claim.

Can a felon have a deer rifle or muzzle loader?

do not know how the law is written, crossbow, muzzle loader, deer rifle, what? if any differenceCan a felon have a deer rifle or muzzle loader?
It depends on which state your conviction occurred in and perhaps where you live now.

The Federal Firearms Owners Protection Act in part reads that, ';Any conviction which has been expunged, or set aside or for which a person has been pardoned or has had civil rights restored shall not be considered a conviction under this chapter, ...

Some states, mine included, automatically return the rights (to vote, own a firearm etc.) once a person had completed his or her sentence. Therefore federal law does not prevent them from owning a firearm. See U.S. v. Caron cite omitted.

If your state is not one that automatically returns your rights then you must get a pardon or have your record expunged in some other manner.

You should check with an attorney prior to purchasing or being in possession of a firearm. Can a felon have a deer rifle or muzzle loader?
This has nothing to do with where you live. In the USA, a felon may not ever posses, or even be near, an actual firearm. A muzlle loading rifle is NOT considered a firearm. However, a muzzle loading pistol, though not considered a firearm, either, is not legal for a felon to own.

Crossbows are legal for felons, as are ';regular'; bows. However, in most states, hunting deer with a crossbow is only legal if you are disabled. In some state, though, it is legal for able-bodied hunters to use a crossbow.
A felon can not own posses or have access to a cartridge firing firearm, under federal law. Then it is up to the states to further disseminate what a felon can posses. My state makes a vast distinction between a felon, who may own a muzzle loading firearm and a violent felon who can not own any firearm.
depending on where you live, you may or may not have a shotgun or hunting rifle, but under no circumstances can you have any sidearms, assault weapons, etc. Felony convictions don't stop you from having a crossbow though.
I think it may depend on the location he lives at, the local laws, and the crime he went away for. I would normally say no but it will depend on his parole officer mostly. If he has served 100% of his time and is not on parole maybe. But, it does depend on what the law says.
In NC convicted felons my hunt with what are classified as primitive weapons, meaning muzzle-loaders and bows. But no muzzle-loading pistols. Best thing to do is to check with you clerk of court, or district attorneys office. They may be able to clarify for you.
If you are an ex-con then the answer is real simple.

    No.

No guns for you, - ever. No matter what kind of gun, the answer will always be: ';No';.

You are a felon and that is the price you pay. You've lost that right forever.

And rightfully so, I might add.
Convicted felons by federal law are not allow to own or posses any firearms (rifle, pistol, shotguns or black powder). You can own primative weapons such as bows, crossbows, knives, etc..

Suggest you check your state laws just to be sure.
One of my best buddies brothers is a felon. And the answer is No. A Felony is federal (nation wide). It doesn't matter what state you are in. No rifle, hand gun, air gun, paintball gun, muzzle loader, shot gun, water gun NOTHING!!!
depends on your state laws but in Pa you can posses a crossbow or Bow and Arrow maybe pellet guns if your off I think you can ';rent'; a rifle if you got out with a guide not sure on that part tough
Muzzle loaders are not considered a Firearm per ATF but, your local laws may forbid it. No for rifle or pistol....yes for bows unless its a local law or CA you better ck.
    * Bow %26amp; Arrow Only.*
idk about bows/crossbows, but as far as i know you cant have any type of gun, except airsoft and bb.
Don't know about the rest of them, but he can't own a fire arm,nor can he vote .
No.... i should know im a proud convicted felon myself, you cant even have bullets.
No guns at all as far as I know.
According to The Dukes of Hazzard, bow and arrow only.

Thank God for Daisey Duke.moment of silence please
    depends on where you live.
it depends what 4. but i say no sorry

What would be the best gauge shotgun to use for a deer kill?

a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs is ideal for deer out to about 100 yards. Unlike what the other guy said, shotguns are not only used with great success for hunting, but many areas are limited to shotguns. I've taken deer, black bear, and even hog with one.

A 20 gauge will work, but limit max range accordingly.

shoot safeWhat would be the best gauge shotgun to use for a deer kill?
A 12-gauge. The guy who said he's never heard of using a shotgun for deer needs to get out more. Use a rifled slug barrel and sabot slugs, and 100-yard shots are realistic. But get closer if you can, to improve your chances. What would be the best gauge shotgun to use for a deer kill?
A 12 gauge with a slug barrel is the best for hunting and killing deer
Bill C has never heard of anyone using a shotgun on deer? buck shot, ever heard of it? lol. 12 gauge is the cheapest and most versitle.
    get a 12 Gauge slug.
    12 GA
Use a 12 ga with a rifled slug. Use buckshot at very close ranges.
A 12 or a 20 with slugs Either gauge shoots a big enough hunk of lead and has the ft lbs to kill a deer at 80 yds and closer.
Obviously Bill C does not hunt a lot. In Indiana, I'm limited to shotguns or rifles that shoot pistol cartridges. I'd never use buckshot, just use slugs. 12 gauge is definitely the most versatile, and easiest to find slugs for. Get a rifled deer barrel with a scope mount or rifle sights, and shoot sabot slugs like the hornady SST. Those will let you take deer up to 200 yards away, but I feel uncomfortable with them on any shot over 150 for sure. You could use regular slugs, instead of sabots, and they're much cheaper. Nothing wrong with them, but you'll have to stick to closer range shots.
I never killed a deer with a rifle, always used a shotgun. I live in the woods-not out in the open range-rifles are not always the best.

    Since gas-operated semi-autos came along, I would use a 12 ga.
12 Gauge shotgun cartridge..... I use slugs with a smooth bore.... Others prefer a rifled barrel with sabot slugs....

    * 12 gauge *
12 or 16 ga with rifled slugs. I would steer-clear of buckshot...personally. Don't forget to check your chokes if you have screw in chokes and have the IMP CYL one in. If your barrel is rifled, don't use rifled slugs.

Lock and load. Keep your powder dry!!
    12 gauge. Tried and True.
    12 ga.

If you have a rifled barrel for you shot gun sabot slugs are more accurate and have a longer effective range.

If you don't, a good rifled slug will work out to close to 100 yards.

    Good luck and be safe.

    Dave
Are you serious? Use at least a .308 but not a shotgun. I've never heard of anyone using a shotgun for dear hunting. You'd end up wounding and terribly torturing that animal.
    for a shot gun...a 12 and 16 gauge work great for closer shots...or use a 30-o6 or a 3o8 for longer shots

  • What happens if a deer breaks his antler?

If a Buck breaks an antler after it has hardend it stays broken till it sheds. If a Buck breaks or damages a antler during the growth stage(antler not deer) it can deform the antlers development. During the development period of a Bucks antler growth the antler is a soft tissue filled with blood. So the breaking of a antler during that time can affect the health of the deer. Bucks can get infections through the antlers during the growth period as there is an active blood supply going to the antler. After the antlers reach max. growth for the year the blood supply is discountinued and the antler hardens to bone like state for the breeding season. What happens if a deer breaks his antler?
Nothing other then it will not grow back until next year. deer damage their antlers during the velvet period. this i when they are most vulnerable. They get damaged in fights, hitting tree branches etc. Once the antler is broken off that particular deer will have that blemish for the entire season. Some deer will only have one antler. Once the antlers fall in March. rodents like field mice chew them for their mineral content. However if the deer lives to the next Spring it will sport new antlers. If things go well the next years antlers will not be damaged. What happens if a deer breaks his antler?
when a deer breaks its antler its kinda like a human chipping a tooth it just wont grow back but it doesnt really but it at a disadvantage compaired to other deer except during mating season where success with a doe is measured in strength and antler size.

Hope this helped and what an odd question :D lol
I can see that if this was an, ';Ask the Audience'; life line you would be getting a good answer.

Yes...the deer break them, crack them and sometimes they get knocked off. They normally fall off after mating season in December/January. Then they begin to grow back larger in the spring and early summer.
It probably hurts the deer when it happens, but the deer will shed them that year and grow a new pair so it is not a big deal. If however, the antler get injured while the deer is in velvet, it can die from blood loss from the veins in the velvet.
Well every fall, deers happen to shed their antlers; they fall off. When spring comes around, the deer develops new antlers. So If a deer breaks his antler, then when fall rolls around, the remain will just fall off and then new ones will grow back.
Nothing.......he can't defend himself as well....but they get a new set every year............kind of like my wife and her weekly shoes:) Have a nice evening.......if you like camping and hiking some folks like to go out and search for them for making different things. knive handles...shelving racks, etc. have a nice evening.........bye
If the animal lives long enough it grows back. They lose them every year anyway and re-grow them. That's why trophy hunters will go back to the same area every year to find the one they think will have the best rack based on what they saw the previous year.
uhh, it grows back, im pretty sure, but if not... well then it could be no longer a male deer! it would get teased by all the other deer with antlers, get kicked out of the heard and make friends with a bear!! haha
It probably groans in pain for a few hours and then sulks for a few more weeks as it waits for the unbroken part to eventually fall off. It will soon grow a new set so I wouldn't worry.
It has to wait until the following year (season) to get a replacement.

Antler regulations are pretty tough, if I blow a tire I can go get a new one same day...
he grows it back next year. simple as that. deer's antlers fall off once a year then grow back. nothing to worry about.
At the end of the year, the antler falls off.

Then, he will grow another one, the next year.
Nothing. They fall off every year anyway.
nothing it will saty broken until it sheds its antlers and it will grow back
It will grow back next year. Deers shed their antlers once a year, and then they grow back.
    ITS ANTLERLESS
It will grow back in time.It mite take a few years to fully grow back.
It stays that way until next year and then it will grow back again!*
i think it's like part of his bone...it will hurt like a *****
They go flying around the woods making a loud farting sound just like a large balloon.

    :)
    They will grow back
    He glues it back on
it grows back in approximately 2 weeks
    i don't really know dudue..

What is the best deer blind hieght, so as not to be detected?

Height doesn't really make you more or less stealthy. Properly covering up and scents on the blind and throwing some camouflage over it and making sure not to make much noise is the biggest thing. Height does give you a nice vantage point though. What is the best deer blind hieght, so as not to be detected?
All predators for deer hunt on the ground (except humans), so deer will instinctively be more wary of things on the ground. Any distance off the ground is good. It's very important to break up your outline. Deer don't see colors so you don't have to get all camo'ed up for deer. Just wear something to break up your outline.

You're more likely to be ';seen'; because of your scent than anything. What is the best deer blind hieght, so as not to be detected?
One might instinctively think, the lower the better, however, I think the noise and the movement factors is what we need to focus on.
Deer cant read tape measures... it's in their union rules.

How do you keep deer and groundhogs out of gardens? (strawberry and vegtable).?

Have some guys go out and tinkle in areas around the garden. I know it sounds wierd but, it really does work. Had the same problem and an old farmer told me to do it, stopped them overnight. How do you keep deer and groundhogs out of gardens? (strawberry and vegtable).?
The best trick that works in my neighborhood:

people place bird-netting on stakes over the low plants - incl. vegetables.

The bird-netting can be obtained at gardening stores, and looks almost transparent - much nicer than the orange plastic netting that look very garish - but yes, do protect the plants.

Good luck! How do you keep deer and groundhogs out of gardens? (strawberry and vegtable).?
OK this is wiered but it works! Take a stocking and a knife and shave off some Irish Spring Soap. They hate the smell. Seenit work a dozen times. Tie the stocking around something and they will leave!
Electric fence, and ultra sonic frequency emitters. Other than that your screwed.
I don't know about the groudhogs, but bird netting is very effective for deer. Fencing the garden will help also.
Clean out your hairbrush and scatter the hairballs around. Or scatter a little of that cheap aftershave that nobody likes. It is the ';human scent'; and they will stay clear.

Can you tell the difference between a 30-06 wound from a muzzleloader wound on a deer?

If you try to harvest a deer during muzzleloader season with a modern rifle, you're asking for big trouble when you get caught. Can you tell the difference between a 30-06 wound from a muzzleloader wound on a deer?
    the 30-06 wound will

be smaller and deeperCan you tell the difference between a 30-06 wound from a muzzleloader wound on a deer?
no way to tell without skinning the deer

Have you ever been deer hunting and accidentally loaded your chapstick?

My sister did good thing she didnt shoot. She would have chapped is behindHave you ever been deer hunting and accidentally loaded your chapstick?
Maybe your sister could get a job loading Dick Cheney's gun the next time he goes hunting.....I am sure that his hunting buddies would appreciate it and they would pay her well too. LOLHave you ever been deer hunting and accidentally loaded your chapstick?
I loaded a pencil and the deer wrote me back
    lol...thats a hoot!=)
At least she wasn't giving any lip service
    haha no ....

that could have caused a problem ...
No. But I used to work with a teenager in local authority care who tried to hold up a petrol station with a garden implement.

    Which is way scarier.
Oh my goodness! That's funny. Quit deer hunting, by the way and I will laugh even more.
What a terrible way to waste some good chapstick!
how in the heck can you mistake chapstick for a bullet or shell??? tell her she is better off far far away from firearms.

This is not a laughing matter...did she have any idea where she was??? what her target was??? what might be behind her target??? get a clue things like this are the reason our second amendment rights are slowly being erroded
Some of these people need to get a life. This is just for fun! I don't think it's going to effect our gun rights by putting this question in this forum. I did an oops by giving one of these idiots a thumbs up. I am so used to giving them that I goofed. Oh well, can't be perfect all the time! FOMCL

Whats the deal with the dead deer in the pond in Dances with Wolves?

I just watched the movie and I still don't get that part.Whats the deal with the dead deer in the pond in Dances with Wolves?
The pond was his only water supply. The deer would have drowned in the pond, and would then decompose and spoil his water. he had to get the deer out, so he didn't get sick. He then burnt the deer, cos it would have been easier than burying it.Whats the deal with the dead deer in the pond in Dances with Wolves?
Now why would you go %26amp; say some thing like that?

Now I have to find the movie %26amp; watch it to see that..
Interesting question. I wondered too. I think it was a warning from the Sioux to any other Army personnel who might come along that this was not a safe place for them to be. After all, if the water was poisoned the deer might have died from that. On the DVD one of the interviews says the deer was a real deer; road kill.

  • How come you can kill a deer and put it up on your wall. but it's illegal to keep one as a pet?

:o( *i want one for christmas!!*

Jen x xHow come you can kill a deer and put it up on your wall. but it's illegal to keep one as a pet?
They do not make good pets, but if you live in the woods and have an apple tree on your property they will come and eat the fallen apples everyday. You can also feed them other things to keep them around, if you like watching them eat and play. You could even name them if you want to.How come you can kill a deer and put it up on your wall. but it's illegal to keep one as a pet?
Who says it is illegal who is this cad that is denying you the chance to show off your gorgeous happiness through the sheer joy of getting up in the morning to the smell of deer poo , they stink to high heaven. Mind you if that is your wish then you shall have one shazam your wish is granted ........................now for mine ???
that is crazy....deers are soo cute and maybe its illegal cuz they don't want animal abuse....or for them to break out with more diseases...yea i want one 2...i have a whole family of deer that pretty much live in my backyard...but i'm worried because i haven't seen them in a while...i hope they are ok!
It depends on your definition of a 'pet', It's not illegal for you to keep one.

    http://www.bds.org.uk/animal_welfare_act鈥?/a>

    'Merry Christmas'.
In Wisconsin, you can get a permit to keep deer. There's lots of people around here that have them.
yes you can also drive at the age of 17 in traffic with all our children.

yet you are not allowed to drink alcohol.
Same reason you can put a bottle in front of me but i can't give you a frontal lobotamy. (apologies to T.W.)
It's not something I've ever really thought of honey, but perhaps you can break the rule :)
Erm, - because the one on the wall ain't alive, so can't be much of a pet ;)
You need to apply to become Santa's little helper and you will see all the deer you want.
A deer is for shooting and hanging on your wall, not for Christmas... remember that!
because that would be animal cruelty but if you want i can be your pet for christmas jk
I don't know, dear is like road kill! Maybe dears are just wildlife making them have to go to the wild!
    because it's dead
    Well I never..

You learn something new each day.....
I can't kill a deer and put it up on my wall.
theyre dangerous. u cant contain those beautiful creatures. plus arent they going extinct
    Does Lord Longleat know this?

Mind you.....he probably feeds his to the lions...

    therefore not technically a 'pet'.....

    more 'pet-food'.... lol.

    EDIT....lmao @ Slinky!
Does that mean my pet Bambi has to go, xx

Anyone remember a christmas special with a wizard like character that had deer antlers on his cloak?

I remember a christmas special done in claymation where there was a wizard looking character who wore a blue/white cloak with deer antlers atop his head. I think there was also a boy who was raised by wolves or lived in a cave with them. Does anyone remember the name of the special?Anyone remember a christmas special with a wizard like character that had deer antlers on his cloak?
I too remember that one and I don't know the title of the film. I did come to a link where you might be able to find the answer your looking for along with some other great oldies.

Deer hunters .What are your thoughts on this?

Last night I was talking to a friend and he has a friend who owns a hunting lodge and a fenced in area with very large deer in it . One of these deer will score 300B%26amp;C and if you bring a check for 30K you can kill this deer. This really does not bother me,people can spend their money however they want, but it does not seem much like hunting to me .Maybe I can go to Bass Pro Shops and catch a world record bass out of their fish tank. What do you think about this?Deer hunters .What are your thoughts on this?
Damn that is a weird question.

I totally agree with sammy .

Maybe use of a handgrenade in the fish tank would take the rest of the effort out of catching the bass No worrying about whether the bait will work or having to haul it out of the tank etc . The hand grenade would also provide the end result of the fish being cleaned ,gutted, scaled and turned into sushie with no actual skills or effort on the part of the hunter/ fisherman..

The same goes for hunting in an enclosed area The only part of the scenario is having the deer tethered close enough to the fence for the hunter(?) to be alble to use a crane to move the kill from the park to a transport vehicle.

The other thought I have is Will the animal be used for food or jusy a trophy to decorate a wall . I personally use a lot of antler as grips on hunting knives because I find the surfavce of the antler provides a damned good grip even when wet . The only problem is that I generally have to wander the area long enough to find antler that has been shed by the animal at the end of the season or visit a deer park and retrieve old antler from the owner of the park. That way I dont have to find and kill an animal just for the head ware that it has at the time. I have also discovered that the skin looks a lot better on the deer keeping its insides dry than on a floor or wall gathering dust.\

Once again just my opinion and I stand ready to be corrected and take the flak.Deer hunters .What are your thoughts on this?
that completely defteats the purpose of of hunting, there is absolutely no sport in it at all. In a way its cheating.
sounds like an idiot to me. people who can't hunt in a real timber where the critter can actually run away to a place where your ';guide'; doesn't know where they are just sound pathetic to me. I would like to take him out coyote hunting some night and see how big a boy he is.
    Bound's hubby here:

I can appreciate the capitalism behind the ranch owner's offer concerning the record deer. But, IMHO, this is not hunting as I was brought up. I was raised to, and do, hunt to put meat on the table. PERIOD! A nice rack is a dividend.

My first deer was a beautiful 10 pointer ... a trophy for NJ. Again, that rack was a dividend.

Any hunter that wants a record rack should expect to work for it .... not take it on a silver platter! I just can't wait for retirement, so I can indulge my hunting.

If the hunter doesn't sweat it out, risk missing the shot, or freeze while stalking or still hunting the buck, where is the pride in taking such a record creature?
My family owns an elk ranch in Colorado. Originally it was to harvest the velvet and enter in to antler competitions. Mostly just a hobby tho. After awhile we had some really good bulls. A man from texas heard of us and offered us $20000 to come harvest our largest bull. We agreed and the next week he showed up to our door. We had arranged to borrow some fenced in land to put the elk on so he could ';hunt'; it. When we told him our plans he said no Ill just take him down now. He shot it thru the fence cut off the head gave us a $1000 tip and left. He didnt even want the meat. Do I agree with this type of hunting? Not at all but I wont stop anyone from paying me a large amount of money to do it. This is not hunting but to each his own. I could have made this story shorter but Im bored.
yeah its good that there getting rid of them

so i dont hit them with my car as much

but seriousley its fun to go deer hunting
Been huntin' for over 40+yrs. %26amp; still haven't found a way to eat the rack. I wonder when he'll get bored with captive animals %26amp; start on humans? For 40K, he can shoot homeless people, I guess. That's just about as much of a hunt. BIG thumbs down!
If the deer is tied up or penned in where one cannot possibly miss his shot, sure, that is not sporting and perhaps your friend's friend should be reported to the game authorities.

Usually the way this works is that the hunter will pay a standard fee for the right to hunt on that land. Then he pays an additional fee according to the trophy animal he kills. That huge 300 Boone %26amp; Crocket deer is probably the prime trophy on the land. The hunter that shoots it had better be ready to fork out 30K.

    H
    don't like that either. I HUNT white tail NOT harvest a house pet! the same goes for baiting a bear. thats not hunting. thats like me going to cabelas and I said ';I want to buy that deer right there, the big on the wall.';
Where is this located? Post his name and address. Or, you can report him, collect the reward, and then turn it over to your states hunter education program.
Not really sporting in any capicity.
Yes i agree,,,,, shoot the bastards
your are right. That is taking the true sport out of it
That definetly aint hunting. I don't know why someone would want to fork out that kind of money for a deer. But there are some people with more money than brains.
hi there, this is ranch hunting and not really hunting at all, you could probably call it live targetting, but you have to remember that the owner of this land has protected this animal for a lot of years, and his genes are scattered allthrough the area, and now its time to change the blood line, you allso have to realise this man makes his living from managing his deer farm, and if he can make 30k on a piece of live stock, he should be able to do it...but i sure don't want to hear it called hunting and the person thats paying the 30k should not be called a hunter,,,maybe exicutioner would suit him better
You have already had some good answers and I agree with those who think that this is not hunting, this is just slaughter. No sport is involved. This is simply trophy killing where the game has no chance. Troy Gentry ( of the country group Mongomery Gentry) currently has his in a crack for allegedly doing something similar to this by shooting a supposedly penned up bear. He has pleaded not guilty.

Anybody who thinks this is hunting and forks over big bucks to kill an animal by this means--------well, I have absolutely NO respect for. I think it is about as low as anyone could go to shoot an animal under these conditions.
Kinda takes the hunt out of hunting.
Very sad, I guess not everyone has the ability to be a real hunter.
This is not hunting, this is a turkey shoot. Just line them up and shoot them................No real sport..............
That is not hunting, It just sounds chicken shxt.
if a 300 class buck is killed inside a fence it wil not register in boone and crockett or pope and young so it would only be the thrill of the kill nothing more most record books want accpet a deer beenn shot in captivity not even its a 20 acre area or a 280 thousnd texas ranch no fences!!
I don't have a problem with hunting lodges and the like....as was stated people can spend their money how they choose. However.....if the area is fenced in it is not hunting, and most records will not be accepted if the animal is fenced in and not free to run. Hunting is a number of things.....freezing cold, hiking in to you stand and not getting dropped off 10 feet from it by ATV, its stalking the animal, not driving within 100 yards and stepping out of the truck 10 feet. Hunting is about the thrill of the hunt and not the record buck. As many other people, I hunt to add food to my table....I am just as proud of the doe I shot last year as I am the 6X6 buck I shot the year before....As I said it is not about the rack but the hunt itself....I think in order to be truly proud of what you hunt you have to really work for it and not go the easy way.
cant you idiots see what the anti hunter that posted this ? is doing he is putting hunter against hunter hunting is hunting .your opinion is just that do you bait ?do you hunt from a treestand? thats not right either oh wait thats just my opion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good luck to all the types of hunters not just the ones that do it according to your rules ps email me @trose2006@hotmail.com if you want to talk more iam all for discussion
I think it is wrong and shouldn't count unless it is fair chase.

Yea i was wondering if deer like to eat honey?

yea i was cleaning out my household food shelf and found some honey and was wondering if i could use it for deer huntingYea i was wondering if deer like to eat honey?
According to a commercial I saw the other day, they really like cranberries. All you have to do is stand around eating a Fruit %26amp; Nut granola bar with cranberries in and they'll flock right to you. I think there might be honey in the granola bars too. Double whammy!!!Yea i was wondering if deer like to eat honey?
YES, but it is illegal to do that in Pennsylvania.* NO baiting permitted.*
yes some deer do like to eat honey but in the spring i think
Yeah, but you might want to put it over corn.
YES.......Deer love anything SWEET.... HONEY, MOLASSES, anything like this Deer will be attracted to and will eat it. It works even better if you mix the Honey with some sort of grain like Wheat or Corn (dried) even Oatmeal (dry)
Sure...they'd love you for it...don't you dare shoot it while it's eating it though...my brother hunts..evil sport!!!!
    Hunting is horrible.

And no, Deer are actually prone away from honey. Bees.

Where from i can get deer hide in India? what will be price range?any legal formalities to have or purchase 1?

I would not think you have any problem getting deer hide from America....we got plenty! I am not sure what the laws are in India concerning the importation, but why would your country object?

  • Have you ever hit a deer with your car..then brought it home and made stew?

EW! Never hit one and I would never eat one. They are all over my back yard in the morning pulling apples off the trees. I would like to smack them around though for leaving piles of poop that my dogs like to roll in.Have you ever hit a deer with your car..then brought it home and made stew?
My brother hit a deer with his truck in May and took the deer to the local Orphanage for them...everyone around there, hunts and takes the kill to them.....

It was an accident, but the deer had to be put down, it was suffering.

I do not eat deer, bear, moose meat at all....I do not like the taste of wild game at allHave you ever hit a deer with your car..then brought it home and made stew?
I was traveling behind the person who hit the deer. I went back home and got help to take it home for stew..

We also made a lot of jerky..
I've hit deer before..I lived in Central Texas, (hitting deer is a regular hazard there) but I've never kept and butchered the meat. although I know people who have!
No Deer in Southern California. I did hit a Rabbit in Arizona and ate it,though.
I think theres no problem with it. The deer is already dead.
The deer actually ran over Zeds car.
A deer ran into the rear side panel years ago, left blood but ran on (NJ)....!!
Nope, only hit duck and skunk with car. :)
Nope, but its definitely on my to do list.
the game warden would not let me
No but I do eat venison now %26amp; then.
uhm that would be a HELLL NO

How much protein is in deer steak or venision?

All meats are high in protein content. The actual amount will depend on how much fat is consumed as part of the meat, the type %26amp; quality of the deer's nourishment.

Deer getting run out of woods after shot and miss?

i just shot at two deer and missed them both saturday and sunday with a shotgun. both didnt know what happend just turned around and ran off i was wondering if i am scrwed for the rest of the seasonDeer getting run out of woods after shot and miss?
No not really, just for the present moment is all.*Deer getting run out of woods after shot and miss?
If you were using buckshot you were probably too far away. Buckshot is only good (then not very good) in the hands of a true expert. Shooting over 20 yards with buckshot is simply unethical because it is almost certain you will hit it with one or more shot, but it will go so far you will never see it again. I am speaking from the experience of seeing more than a dozen deer lost after being hit with shot, and but 2 actually collected by the hunter. Get damned close, or get a rifle or slug and learn how to use them. J
Spend some time on the range
Put some kind of sight(s) on the shotgun. The very idea of a gun without precise sights on it is as absurd as shooting a pistol with only one hand. Just because people believe or do a particular thing, is more often an indication it is at least partially in error. A luminous red dot non-magnifying model will allow you the fastest sight picture, and you can hunt excellently way into twilight, the very best time to be hunting! Now, the fact you scared off two deer on successive days, suggests that in this particular area, the deer are possibly as likely to be chased toward you as away from you, by high hunting pressure. In the wilderness, you likely wouldn't have seen deer the second day. I have a $30 BSA Red Dot on my T/C 45 Colt barrel for twilight use in the shadows under the big trees, which is even better, and you really can't see iron sights or crosshairs there at those times! Regards, Larry.
same here one day my uncle shot at a deer and mist the next day it came back and my dad shot and mist but i expect to see it next weekend
You may be if that's a typical example of your shooting. (Just joking: anybody who hasn't missed hasn't hunted). The deer, though, typically run a short distance and more or less resume their normal activity shortly thereafter. It's quite possible one of them will be back in the same spot by next weekend.
Did you go to where they were standing and look for blood or did you just walk away? you might have nicked one good enough to kill him, maybe you better go back and check....
no your not ive shot at adeer at a watch come back the next day and the same deer comes back
I am a certifed hunter safety instructor.

The deffinition of insanity is 'doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result'.

Why did you miss? Were you too far away? Did you accidentally use bird shot? Did you practice at the range? Were you using buck shot? Did you sight in the shotgun when using slugs?

Shotgun hunting is the easiest thing in the whole wide world. You do a quick stop at the range with a big box - shoot it at 25-50 yards and verify the pellets all hit where you aimed. On hunting day simply get within 30-50 yards of the deer, point in the general direction and watch it fall. How can you mess that up?

If you were using slugs - good chance you have scared these deer - but they will be back.

You need to spend some time this week at the range. Grab a big box, roll of white butcher or wrapping paper and a staple gun. Cover the big box and make a big X in it. But this box on top of another - you want that X to be about 2.5 feet off the ground. Start at 50 yards and fire - make a mental note of how many pellet are in a 12'; circle around that X and how low they are. This tells you if you need to aim a bit high on the deer next time.

Then move to 30-25 yards. Same thing. Count the pellets and see where they fall.

Last - cover the box with new paper and try this with slugs. 25, 50, and 100 yards. If you do well at these ranges - feel free to move the box out a bit furthur.

One hint. Be sure to wear the exact same clothing you expect to wear while hunting. I've seen guys do perfectly fine at the range - and they miss deer time and time again. It's because they ware a shooting jacket with cushion pad at the range - and they don't while hunting and this gives them a case of flinch or anticipation.

    Hope this helps

No, you may not see much activity for a while or the rest of the day but they come back. Especially if deer like a particular area they will for sure be back. Hope This Helps

Do you know of any fast and easy ways to cook deer meat, loin, or back strap?

I butterfly cut the back strap, season, then fry in a pan on the stove with olive oil.

Venison is very easy to over cook, so don't do it! Also be ready to eat it right away. The meat is always much better fresh off the pan and not cold or warmed up.

Enjoy!Do you know of any fast and easy ways to cook deer meat, loin, or back strap?
dip in flour and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side over med-high heatDo you know of any fast and easy ways to cook deer meat, loin, or back strap?
DIP IN FLOUR AND FRY BABY FRY
Frying deer meat with onions tomatos and peppers works pretty quick. I don't eat Lion. All animals have back straps it's called loin or tenderloins.

Most of the time I make lots of jerky and sausages with my game meat. I find it tastes better and goes farther that way. I smoke the sausages and jerky then pack it and freeze it till I need it. My kids are grown and It's just me and the Mrs.
cut the loin in to 1 inch thick fillet and wrap them with bacon ans stick a tooth pick to hold the bacon on the sides and grill till they are cooked
you can butterfly them out and cook them in a pan on the over with butter and onions, you can make them into rolls, cut them lengthwise, and tenderize both sides, spread cream cheese on one side and then put jalepenos in there and roll them tight wrap bacon around them and stick toothpicks through them to hold it together and keep the bacon on. and the put on the grill..

cook all venison to medium - medium well if will be more tender and tend to go over better with people that are skeptical about wild game.
    yes- do you?
I love to flour backstraps and fry them in butter. If I have the time, I will let them soak in italian dressing overnight, and grill them.
salt it and rub it all over the chosen meat, then fried it really quick till its shows no more red, let it dry and if you want to, let it dry for 2 days and you have fast deer jerky.

you can bake it or grill it on low till the meat is desired level, and then you have deer steak...simple fast dishes i do.
I know a recipe that works great for venison, beef and pork. The marinade is based on 5lbs of meat, repeat the marinade recipe for every 5 lbs of meat. This recipe is not quick but is really good. The marinade is only 3 ingredients:

2 cups of salsa (I prefer pace hot)

    1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce

    1/2 cup brown sugar

Mix all together and place meat in marinade for at least 6 hours (Keeping refrigerated)

You can cook with a slow cooker or in the oven.

In a slow cooker put meat and marinade in pot and cook on medium for 6 hours.

In the oven cook for 6 hours at 350 (Make sure you cover the dish in the oven).

When we fix this at our house we fight about who gets the left-overs.

I hope you enjoy the recipe.
try this (mind you i havent yet but do want to) marinade your tenderloin in a mixture of red wine and minced garlic for 8 to 12 hours in the fridge. then cut them on a diagonal about 2 to 2and a half inches turn them cut side up and slice about half way thru them to make a ';pocket'; set aside

saute onions and mushrooms in butter and some of the marinade (careful of blue flames lol) until onions are soft then use a blender to chop them very finely (puree) stuff the puree in the pockets of loins and bake at 350 degrees until done to your liking //// this recipie was taken out of a cook book from Colorado and it sounds very good
Frying back-strap is quick. The smaller the pieces the quicker they cook. (you knew that) Don't overcook d/m it drys easily.
Backstrap and loin are (IMO) best when cut into inch thick pieces then pounded flat, breaded, and fried. A good gravy over the top is excellent as well.

I don't really do steaks as it dries easily. I generally take out the straps and loins, cut up some stew meat (for stew, stir fry, etc) and then grind the rest to use as hamburger, sausage or make into sticks.

If it is a young deer, I will save the ribs for a BBQ.

This works on back straps as well as steaks.

    1 cup of Soysauce

    1 cup of Pineapple Juice

1 clove of minced or chopped Garlic

    1/2 chopped onion

    Lowrey's Seasoning to taste

    White Pepper to taste

Mix the Soy Sauce and Pineapple Juice thoroughly together, adding the Lowrey's and White Pepper.

If you have an injector, wrap Steaks or Back Straps in Plastic Wrap and inject meat with the mixture. The plastic wrap will prevent making a mess over your wife's clean counters.

Once this is complete, add the garlic and onions into your marinade.

Unwrap the meat out of the plastic, and place into a 1/2'; container with a lid. We have the Tilia Food saver container and love to use it, as it will force the marinade into the meat much quicker.

Otherwise, use a lidded container. Add the meat and pour the remaining marinade over top of your venison.

Put the lid on and set in the refrigerator over night for best results.

The next day, fire up the grill. Let it heat up to a high heat.

Once to temperature, throw them Bad Boys on the grill for about 2 minutes per side, depending on how thick a cut. I prefer a 1-1/2'; cut of meat.

    DO NOT over cook!!

If you prefer your meat medium rare, cook your venison the same.

Prepare yourself for some awesome Table Fare.

the roasts.chop em up,, make a stew like a beef stew..add red wine......tasty.,,,,,,,,,,cook a LONG time...........
Here are a couple of ez ones that are very good!

    Crock Pot Deer Roast

Tenderize deer roast and season to taste. (I usually use Tony Chachere's Cajun Seasoning). Put in crock pot. Add one package of dry Lipton Onion Soup Mix (or Mushroom or Onion/Mushroon) and about 2 C water and stir to dissolve soup mix. Cut up about 4-5 med/lg potatoes or 6-8 new potatoes and 1 bunch of fresh carrots into chunks and add them to the pot. You can also add 1 package of fresh mushroom pieces. Put on low and simmer until tender (either overnight for next day's meal or first thing in the the morning for late lunch or early supper)

You could speed this up somewhat by using canned veggies and cooking on high in crock pot or roasting in oven.

    Deer BBQ or Sloppy Joes

Tenderize roast or other cuts of deer meat and put in crock pot. Pour in a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce plus about 2 bottles full of water. Leave on low; stir occasionally until done and add more water if necessary. Meat will fall apart--great on sandwiches or stuffed inside a baked potato.

I also use ground deer meat for anything I would use ground beef for and cook according to recipe. My family loves deer chili and deer spaghetti. I think deer tacos would work, too. I have made both the chili and the roast for guests who didn't know it was venison, and I don't think they knew the difference--at least they ate it all and never complained, and in some cases, went back for seconds!

Some friends of ours like to wrap medallions of meat in bacon, then dip in milk and seasoned flour and fry them chicken-fried-steak style. They were delicious.
    Venison Chili

    1 lb. ground venison

    1-2 pk. chili seasoning

    3 cans tomato soup

    2 cans chili beans

    water

    chopped onion

    grated cheddar cheese

Brown venison in pan with garlic salt to taste. Set aside strainer to drain grease. In pot combine tomato soup, chili beans and chili seasoning. Stir until well blended. Add venison and stir to blend. Cook until heated through, adding water as needed to thin out.

    VENISON MARSALA

    7 鈥?9 lb. venison roast

    陆 to 戮 lb. bacon

    1陆 c. Marsala wine

    2 -3 pinches rosemary leaves

Lay bacon strips over roast in crosshatch pattern. Be generous with bacon. Tie bacon onto roast with twine. Then, use meat baster to force Marsala wine between bacon and roast generously. Use the water smoking method for best results. Use at least 4 to 6 cups of water in pan along with crushed rosemary leaves. Pour remaining wine over roast and into water pan. Add water to pan as needed while cooking. Smoke cook approximately 8 hours.

    VENISON SAUERBRATEN 10-12 servings.

3 to 3陆 lb. Venison chuck meat

    2 onions, sliced

    2 bay leaves

    12 peppercorns

    12 juniper berries, optional

    6 whole cloves

    2 t. salt

    1陆 c. red wine vinegar

    1 c. boiling water

    2 T. shortening

    12 gingersnaps, crushed (3/4 c.)

    2 t. sugar

Place venison roast in glass baking dish with onions, bay leaves, peppercorns, berries, cloves, salt, vinegar, and boiling water. Cover tightly and refrigerate, turning venison twice a day, at least 3 days. Never pierce venison when turning.

Drain venison, reserving marinade. Cook venison in shortening in heavy skillet until brown on all sides. Add marinade mixture. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer until venison is tender, 3 to 3陆 hours. Remove venison and onions from skillet. Keep warm.

Strain and measure liquid in skillet. Add enough water, if necessary, to measure 2 陆 cups. Pour liquid into skillet. Cover and simmer 10 minutes. Stir gingersnaps and sugar into liquid. Cover and simmer 3 minutes. Serve venison and onions with gravy.
Secret to this is slow cooking using oven, oven roaster or slow cooker best results and you want to add beef bast broth of some sort with Worthershire sauce this takes the wild nature taste out of the meat If you choose to use this as ground beef I suggest adding real ground beef half and half mixture and it will taste and do better if your a ground turkey person healthier eating use that and surely add beef boullin for the flavor also washing all fresh hunted meat in salt water gets old blood out and then at least 1-2 hours prior to cooking soak in a milk bath like when making liver and onions does wonders for this sort of cooking

    http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/鈥?/a>

My car was hit by a deer with no insurance. I was told to get insurance. Can I still file a claim?

What is the best rifle for deer and elk hunting?

30.06What is the best rifle for deer and elk hunting?
The 308 with Nosler Partition bullets can easily take all north american game, including using the big 200 grain bullets on the biggest brown bears, which is normally done currently in Siberia on the world's biggest brown bears. However, the 150 grain NP's are fine for deer, and have modest recoil which aids shooter accuracy. Many would move up to the 165 or 180 grain for the biggest elk, paying the price of increased recoil. The NP's have extreme dynamic range on targets large and small, near or far. You should have a 3X9 variable scope, the 3X for quick sight picture on close or moving targets, and the 9X for resting on the daypack for distance shots. Have a gunsmith work over the trigger pull for maximum accuracy, if it is the least bit gritty. Practice with the cheap ammo at the range. But the few extra pennies spent on that ';pivotal moment shot'; are well spent on Nosler Partition bullets. You may have to load your own ammo. Check MidwayUSA.com for supplies and a reloading manual containing a tutorial on reloading. Regards, Larry. What is the best rifle for deer and elk hunting?
Major manufacturer of a bolt action 30-06 rifle. You will need a variable scope to zero in on various distances. Take a basic firearms safety course. There are a lot more dangers than you think hunting with a firearm. Check your local hunting areas requirements for proper harvesting of the deer or elk.
What is the best rifle for deer and elk hunting? A good bolt-action with good optics. I like the Remington 700 but the Browning A-bolt is good. I also like the Steyr Mannlicher Pro Hunter but that may be a bit pricey for some. Ruger and Savage also manufacture good rifles. Caliber? At least a .308 Winchester and the .30-06 Springfield is even better.

    H
You want a bolt action rifle by one of the big name guys, be it Ruger, Winchester, Browning, CZ, Remington, Savage, etc.

Get one with a 22 inch standard profile barrel (don't get a thick heavy varmint barrel)

For chambering, I suggest 30-06 or 270 winchester
You will definetly need the stopping power of a .30cal round. Anything lower will not cut it. I use a Remington Model 700 SPS Buckmasters Edition in .30-06 Springfield and a Winchester Model 70 Sporter Deluxe in .30-06 Springfield also.
for dear and elk id say a .30 -06 or .300 magnum or .308 or .338 anything in that naborhood really is optimum for dear.. i use a 12 gauge slug wich is much more powerfull than them all but much less range and acuracy ...i use that cuz i dont have a high power rfile yet
I think you'll find that one of the best calibers (I assume that's what you mean) that will cross over between he two, is the 30.06. Others will work too, but outside of the 30.06 and .308 ammo prices start to increase.
.280 rem or 30-06 caliber , as far as particular rifle, savage, remington or thompson just to name a few of my preferences, you will get many different opinions though.
7mm, 308 or 30-06 are good All of the Remington's are great but timber/stainless CDLs are perfect

    http://www.remington.com/products/firear鈥?/a>
    270 - 300 - 308 - 30-06 - 338 is a bit heavy for a deer but -----
.308 and 30-06 would be the best and look for a notable and major firearms dealer.
    Remington 700 .300 Winchester Mag.
300 winchester with 180 grain teflon tip jacketed. Tagger
    I would go with a .30-06
You should get an M82A1, a 50 caliber rifle used in the millitary to blow someones butt off! lol

What type of animals are herbivores? And are deer herbivores?

Yes, deer are herbivores. If you are unsure if an animal is a herbivore or not, check the eyes. Eyes on the sides of the head (like in deer, rabbits, mice, ect.) indicate that they are herbivores. Their eyes are on the sides so that they have better 360 degree vision to look out for predators. Likewise, if an animal has eyes in the front, like in humans, lions, dogs, etc., they are carnivores or omnivores (like us). Omnivores eat both meat and veggies. Hope that helped! What type of animals are herbivores? And are deer herbivores?

Herbivores eat vegetation, yes deer are vegans.
Animals that are herbivores may be big or small and can be dangerous to other animals even though they will not ';hunt'; other animals. Examples include; bison, rhinos, elephants, most rats, squirrels, cows, horses, etc. Just wanted to point out how much they can vary.

People usually only think of animals as herbivores, but by definition a herbivore is any organism that normally consumes plants or algae (or some bacteria). In addition to animals, many fungi, some bacteria, and a few species of flowers can be considered herbivores.

Zoologists define a herbivore as an animal that is adapted to eat primarily plant matter (rather than meat). (I noticed this ? in the zoology section:))
Deer are herbivores, they eat vegetation rather than meat which is consumed by carnivores, and animals consuming both such as man are omnivores. Stegosauridae were herbivores, T-Rex and Velicoraptos, carnivores. Deer also appreciate salt licks if you are feeding any and they will eat hay, especially alfalfa.
yes deer are herbivores...anything that eats veggies, plants, grass etc etc...

Is a 308 a good gun to deer hunt with?

Is a 308 win. a good powerful gun to go hunting for whitetail, because right now i shoot a 22-250 and i dont like how it dont have enough knock down power, so will the 308 drop them or about how far will they run??Is a 308 a good gun to deer hunt with?
.308 is plenty. It is a superb cartidge. All you would ever need for whitetail, mulie, hogs, or even elk. It will also puch paper at 1000 yards if you and your rig are capable (I will admit - I aint). For deer though all you really need is a 243. The 25-06 is a great round also. As many have said - shot placement is the key. Ironically though - I have killed more deer with a 22-250 than anything else.

Is a 308 a good gun to deer hunt with?
Yes it is a great gun for deer hunting, but no one can answer how far they will run. It depends on shot placement, whether the deer was running or not when you hit it, what kind of terrain, just in general how bad the deer thinks it can get away. There is just to many variables. thousands of people shoot the 308 and thousands swear by it. Some will tell you tales of mythical powers of the 308. Bottom line is its a 30 caliber projectile traveling between 2700-3200fps. When it first came out it was less popular than the 30-06 because anything the 308 could do the 30-06 could do a little better. This is almost a direct quote from page 444 of the Hornady 7th edition reloading manual. But I must say Hornady is partial to the 308, because of its medium sized action and it is not finicky as to the type of powder that works well in it. In hornady's test rifle all powders listed gave more than acceptable results. As far as more powerful than a 22-250 the simple answer is yes. Although the 22-250 can be loaded up to 4100fps. You also need to know that some states do not allow hunting with 22 caliber rifles. Mississippi is one of them. Here a 22-250, 220 swift, or 223 are all not legal for hunting white tail deer. Also some outfitters out west will not allow use of anything smaller than a 30 caliber bullet when hunting their trophy animals. So a 308 will fulfill all of those requirements.
308 is a little overpowered for deer, but it's one of the most popular choices. Whether they run after the shot depends on where the bullet goes. There's no such thing as knock-down power, but using an adequate caliber is certainly a better idea than that silly 22.

I normally choose a deer-class caliber when I'm hunting deer. That's things in the vicinity of 6.5x55 or 7x57. But I'm not ashamed to hunt with something larger like 348 Winchester or even 9.3x62 on occasion.
The 308 is a great deer rifle. It's one of those guns where if money were no object then everyone would go out and get the perfect gun to hunt each particular animal with, they would get the 308 for whitetail deer. But since money is always a factor seems like more people just step up to a 7mm, or 30-06, or something like that so they will have enough gun to hunt elk with, without changing guns.

But to answer your question. The 308 is perfect for deer.
The .308 is perfect for deer......

And do you know what the best thing about the .308 cartridge is?????

When your not hunting you can target shoot on the cheap because .308 ammunition in bulk is inexpensive!

    Take a look.......

    http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/st鈥?/a>

The .308 has plenty of knockdown power...... You need a minimum of 1000 foot pounds of energy to adequately take white tail deer... Look at this ballistics table and you will note most .308 cartridge loads do that easily to 400 yards...

    http://www.shootingtimes.com/ballistics/鈥?/a>
You've chosen well. A .308 is a great deer cartridge - one of the best. More sniper rifles are chambered in this round than any other, because it is amazingly accurate. However, bullet placement is always the key. A gut shot deer will run for miles, whether it is shot with a .308 or a .458 mag. Put the bullet in the heart/lungs, and you'll have a deer down.
The .308 is a fine round. Remember you can't hunt with military fmj bullets. I don't know where you are, but I live in Tn. and hunting deer with anything smaller than .24 cal. is illegal. If you are not sure, check your hunting laws.
Shot placement is key. A .308 will do the job as long as you do your job. Get them in the vitals and they will drop. Of course, with perfect shot placement you should be able to drop one with a .22-250, so maybe you need a little more time at the range.

A 308 is powerful enough for almost all game in the lower 48, given the right range and bullet placement.
The .308 is an excellent choice for deer hunting, and the .22-250 is a fine varmint cartridge.

    Doc
The .308 will do fine. With good shot placement and the proper bullet they should drop in there tracks or nearly so.

  • If deer can't see the color orange at all why wear camouflage?

If that is true you could sneak up on them or can they kinda see you like in 'the predator'If deer can't see the color orange at all why wear camouflage?
because it is prettyIf deer can't see the color orange at all why wear camouflage?
The Camo breaks up a silhouette. I know that camo helps when hunting turkeys
So the other deer hunters can see you and not shot you!
Deer see the PATTERN of the camo, which matches the pattern of the woods around them. The orange color is so OTHER HUNTERS can see you and not shoot you! Deer also spot motion really well, which is why you should 'freeze', and why they 'freeze' when you catch them in your headlights. If you drive along and see some deer inthe road, honk your horn. That will keep them from crashing in through your windshield and kicking and goring you.
Solid orange shows a shape, but in winter months when gun hunting, orange is safety against ....POW! BANG! Your dead.
Stupid!!! so you don't get shot by your friends!!!
Is that the reason hunters wear orange? I always thought it was so they could see fellow hunters better. Boy, am I stupid.
Deers can see orange...It's Safety... that's why 25 sq.in has to be in orange...so your sorry a** doesn't get killed.

    Camo is to blend easier!
It breaks up your silouette.....and the other hunters think it's cool.
so men have a reason to dress up like G.I. joe and go dancing around in the woods!
so other hunters do not shoot you on accident
Deers can be alerted by other animals as well. so its important to be as invisible as possible to prey. They operate on Homeostasis, so if a bird is freaked out suddenly, deers and other animals will take notice and react accordingly.
deer see the color orange as a white or lighter Grey, being as they see in black and white or shades between the two colors. the camouflage however breaks up your outline so as to hide your silhouette and help to blend you into the surrounding area.

These deer keep coming to my backyard?

Every single day deer have come into my backyard and eat EVERYTHING. Are there any good ways of making them stop eating everything? Please don't suggest shooting them I just want them gone not deadThese deer keep coming to my backyard?
There are a wide variety of plants that deer do not like. They tend to stay away from them. Talk to your local nurseryman about them, and he could recommend them to you for the area in which you live. I have heard, that a light spray of household ammonia around the bushes will keep deer away, though I have never tried it. Another place you might check with, is your local Fish and Game Dept. I'm with you, don't kill em, just move em.These deer keep coming to my backyard?
a fence, dogs. another thing i have heard about is a sprinkler with a sensor so that way when the animal comes by is sprays water to scare them,

BUT, i would enjoy them! not many people get ot expierene wildlife, in its finest. they probably come up there b/c their home has been destroyed!
shoot them with a bb gun it will just sting them a little and they will leave
get some lion piss and pour it in your backyard it will scare them away for good
    Get a fence

Is rudolph the red nosed reindeer a deer or a doe?

growing up it was a deer(boy), after i got to college a professor searched it and said it was really a doe? so which is it?:Is rudolph the red nosed reindeer a deer or a doe?
All of Santa's reindeer are female since they are the only ones who keep their antlers in winter. Is rudolph the red nosed reindeer a deer or a doe?
well like someone above me said only female deer keep their antlers in the winter, but then what about Rudolph's girlfriend Clarice? I think Rudolph is just one of those things you'll never figure out the gender of lololol
Deer is the term for animal in theCervidae family. Reindeer, White tailed, etc. They usually have antlers. Male deer are called Bucks, females are does. Young are fawn.

An interesting thing about reindeer is that both males and females get antlers (most deer, only the males). Things get even better in that the females... though their antlers are generally smaller...have their antlers for longer. They get theirs in the mid to late summer, and the antlers do not fall off until late winter or early spring (Feb-ish). Males lose their antlers earlier, usually in Late November or early December. Since males usually wouldn't have antlers around Christmas, your professor claims Rudolf is a female...she has her antlers until February.

Some other fun things...Reindeer hooves flatten out, so they actually help hold the deer up on snow, like snowshoes.

Females have their antlers longer so they can chase the males away from food supplies, thus increasing the chance that their young (they are usually pregnant in the winter) will survive.

THey have hair on their noses...
well he kinda is a baby or kid reigndeer because he was born it said a few years later so i would say he is a kid boy reighndeer

i think thats how it goes lol
    I never thought about that. The correct presentation is Buck, Deer represents both genders of ';Doe';, and ';Buck.';
    Rudolph is a buck.
A doe is a female, deer encompasses both sex's . Do you mean a buck or a doe?

Rudolph is a he, so a buck.
interesting lol he was a buck
    I got an email with this on it and I quote the author: ';REMEMBER THIS AT CHRISTMAS TIME';

According to the Alaska Department of

Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain

their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.

    Therefore, according to EVERY historical

rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl.

We should've known... ONLY women would

be able to drag a fat-butt man in a red velvet suit all around the world...Ms Hill (Old Dominion Freight) Hope to clear you on this one...enjoy your Christmas everyone! Liz
