What would be the best gauge shotgun to use for a deer kill?

a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs is ideal for deer out to about 100 yards. Unlike what the other guy said, shotguns are not only used with great success for hunting, but many areas are limited to shotguns. I've taken deer, black bear, and even hog with one.

A 20 gauge will work, but limit max range accordingly.

A 12-gauge. The guy who said he's never heard of using a shotgun for deer needs to get out more. Use a rifled slug barrel and sabot slugs, and 100-yard shots are realistic. But get closer if you can, to improve your chances. What would be the best gauge shotgun to use for a deer kill?
A 12 gauge with a slug barrel is the best for hunting and killing deer
Bill C has never heard of anyone using a shotgun on deer? buck shot, ever heard of it? lol. 12 gauge is the cheapest and most versitle.
get a 12 Gauge slug.
12 GA
Use a 12 ga with a rifled slug. Use buckshot at very close ranges.
A 12 or a 20 with slugs Either gauge shoots a big enough hunk of lead and has the ft lbs to kill a deer at 80 yds and closer.
Obviously Bill C does not hunt a lot. In Indiana, I'm limited to shotguns or rifles that shoot pistol cartridges. I'd never use buckshot, just use slugs. 12 gauge is definitely the most versatile, and easiest to find slugs for. Get a rifled deer barrel with a scope mount or rifle sights, and shoot sabot slugs like the hornady SST. Those will let you take deer up to 200 yards away, but I feel uncomfortable with them on any shot over 150 for sure. You could use regular slugs, instead of sabots, and they're much cheaper. Nothing wrong with them, but you'll have to stick to closer range shots.
I never killed a deer with a rifle, always used a shotgun. I live in the woods-not out in the open range-rifles are not always the best.

Since gas-operated semi-autos came along, I would use a 12 ga.
12 Gauge shotgun cartridge..... I use slugs with a smooth bore.... Others prefer a rifled barrel with sabot slugs....

* 12 gauge *
12 or 16 ga with rifled slugs. I would steer-clear of buckshot...personally. Don't forget to check your chokes if you have screw in chokes and have the IMP CYL one in. If your barrel is rifled, don't use rifled slugs.

Lock and load. Keep your powder dry!!
12 gauge. Tried and True.
12 ga.

If you have a rifled barrel for you shot gun sabot slugs are more accurate and have a longer effective range.

If you don't, a good rifled slug will work out to close to 100 yards.

Good luck and be safe.

Are you serious? Use at least a .308 but not a shotgun. I've never heard of anyone using a shotgun for dear hunting. You'd end up wounding and terribly torturing that animal.
for a shot gun...a 12 and 16 gauge work great for closer shots...or use a 30-o6 or a 3o8 for longer shots
