What would be a good rifle for deer and hog hunting?

Most hog hunting is in cover in my area, so something handy is a good idea. I like the long-discontinued Winchester 71 and the Remington 700 Mountain version, and one of my kids used Remington's Model 7. There are plenty of other short rifles and carbines out there. Cartridge selection is even broader, with pretty well anything from 6.5mm on up being adequate.

The best hog rig I ever saw belongs to an old classmate: a side-by-side in 8x57 IS that points just like a little double should.What would be a good rifle for deer and hog hunting?
M249 SAWWhat would be a good rifle for deer and hog hunting?
Springfield M1a rifle with 5rd magazines. Its what alot of U.S. snipers use in combat and the 308 Nato round is legal for hunting deer and would be a great hog stopper!! I think the m16 with a few modifications would be a great hunting and sniping tool, but its still illegal to hunt with the 223 round.
Depends on how much you want to spend, and where you'll be hunting. For brushy or heavy cover hunting, a Marlin 1895G in .45-70 is good for 100 yards or less and will drop a hog or a big deer like a ton of bricks. For the wide open spaces, a bolt-action .30-06 with a 3x9 scope would do fine for both, just use 220 grain bullets for large animals. Savage, Sako, Browning, Kimber, Remington, Marlin, Winchester, Mossberg all make good, affordable bolt-guns.

To go on the ultra inexpensive side, get a surplus Enfield MKI or MKII in .303 British, or an 8mm Mauser 98 - they'll do the job too.

G'day mate,i use a 308 cal on pigs and deer here in Australia and our deer are a lot bigger than yours in the states.I never have to use a second shot and i never have to track it down.For pigs i believe caliber starts at .223 to 3006 here in Australia but head shot for pig with the .223 and deer from 243 to 3006 any thing else is an over kill except for long distance shooting.I use a scoped rifle 308 on the open ranges to half bushy ranges but in thick scrub i use a 303 and some times i take the scope off my 308 also.A shot gun is very good also with sg ssg or solid slugs.cheers mate
i like the 243 for deer and the 30-30 for hog. the last 2 hogs i shot were around 400+,one was shot with the 30/06 and the other with the 30-30. both were shot at about 100 yards. the hog shot with the 30/06 ran for cover as the bullet passed all the way through him. the one shot with the 30-30 dropped in his tracks.we found the bullet resting against the inside of his ribs having tore through his heart when we skinned him out.the 150 gr bullet was in a perfect mushroom.
A rifle chambered in 30/30 or in .270..... The 30/30 would be an excellent choice for closer ranges under 125 yards.... And the .270 would be fine for ranges up to 300 yards......

* 30-06, 308, 30-30, 30-40 Krag, 303 British, 32 Winchester Special.*
I use a 30-30 because i hunt in heavy brush and its just handier to use in the brush.but it would really depend on what type of terrain you are hunting.i'm in N.E. OK five miles from AR
I would go with a .308 win round
.300 win mag. It does everything a 30-06 does better.
